Gingham For The Weekend

Good Lord, my legs are pale! I guess you don't see it until they're photographed, right? Note to self: gradual self tanner, STAT.

Having said that, this gingham dress from Old Navy is just too cute not to share. I wore it today to run errands and then later to a casual birthday party at a friend's home. I also carried my new Tory Burch Thea Convertible Tote, which I plan to do a full review on soon!

I also filmed a "haul" video of recent purchases. You may have seen some of them on my blog already and there are some new ones, too!

Happy weekend!

Half A Sleeve

I absolutely love half-sleeve tops. This one is a recent purchase from Banana Republic and it's so easy to wear and is a great transition piece between our searing hot summers and our (less) searing hot falls.

A simple cream and black outfit is always classic and today I added a faux calf-hair leopard print heel for a little interest in an otherwise basic outfit.

For the Beach Two...

Over the weekend I shared with y'all a super cute cover-up I purchased for our upcoming trip to the Bahamas.

I recently found this adorable dress at Topshop @Nordstrom so I thought I would share this one too. It looks quite muted in these photos, but it really shimmers and is more striking in person.

I love the way this dress looks with a tan and it's sort of looser-fitting which is nice for a beachy climate.

Wednesdays in White

Thank you for all of your feedback on getting back to the DSLR photos! Kevin has been a champ dealing with taking these every morning while holding Harper on his hip, so if there's anyone to thank for no more mirror photos, it's him!

I pretty much compulsively buy white dresses and this J.Crew bow-back dress from a couple of years ago is a favorite. I paired it with a navy blue cardigan (not shown) when I got to the office.

The one thing that's tricky about this dress is that the fabric wrinkles like crazy. It's a cotton linen-ish fabric. I always have 20 or 30 extra minutes in the morning before we leave the house, so I just get on the floor in my work clothes with Harper so we can have a little quality time before we have to start our commute. This isn't ideal for the outfit situation, but I'd rather have those moments than a perfect-looking dress.

Recent Purchases + Haul Video

After sharing my hair tutorial video recently on my YouTube channel, I got a lot of sweet notes and wonderful feedback about making more of an effort to keep my channel up. I promised to try and film one video per month so I shared some recent purchases today in a "haul video" (I still think that's a bit of a funny term, but it is what it is). You can watch the video, below, or simply check out the items in this post!

A Jeweled Collar

Did y'all know that J.Crew changed the design of their No. 2 pencil skirt? What the heck! Aside from the fact that they wrinkle like crazy from sitting/general wear, they are nearly perfect in terms of fit. Now, to be fair, I haven't tried the new style on, so I could very well like them as much or more, but the feedback I've gotten so far has not been positive. It made me thankful to own the original version of this skirt in an embarrassing amount of colors.

Yesterday I paired it with a J.Crew factory jeweled-collar blouse. I love the feminine detail of the ruffled and embellished collar.

Before I go, I wanted to share the one item I picked up from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale--and it's these gorgeous faux calf hair, leopard-print heels by Halogen. I love the lower heel and that the print is calf hair, I always think that looks more expensive when the shoe has an animal print. They fit great and are on sale right now for $59.90! You can buy them here.

Lace + Chambray

I'm having a lot of my favorite work dresses altered at the tailor this week so sign me up for a week full of skirts!

This navy blue lace skirt from Zara has been one of my most favorite pieces for a few years now. It's so feminine and easy to wear.

I've also been wearing my Vince Camuto Effel sandals like crazy. They're SO comfortable. Thanks to Luba for recommending them!

Black With a Flare

I'm still on my dress streak and I've been loving fuller skirts lately. Over the years, I've worn this Club Monaco dress too many times to count. It's such a substantial cotton---but still feels airy enough for these hot and humid days.

I also have to acknowledge my gold key necklace. This is a super old find from F21 that I got for like $4. I haven't worn it in quite some time, but something called me to it when I spotted it in my jewelry drawer. It's so simple and pretty and you can't beat that price. I really like this one that is available there now.

A Full White Dress

I love a white dress. Over a month ago I tried this one at at Gap. I loved it, but wanted to order the tall version since I needed the extra length. It looks like a lot of other people loved this dress too because it was on backorder.

It finally arrived last week and I love it just as much as when I first tried it on! The full skirt is so fun and I love that the sleeves are longer--- it's a nice change from my sleeveless and cap-sleeved dresses.

Also, it's super comfortable. The one downside on this is that it wrinkles like crazy, but you'll find that with most cotton fabrics if you're sitting at your desk. It doesn't bother me enough not to purchase it.
dress- gap (sold out- similar, similar, similar... other white dresses I love- 1 |  2  |  3)  |  shoes-  nordstrom  |  necklace- tiny tags, ?  | watch- michael kors
As you can see, their is a verry subtle stripe to the fabric. It's well-lined (I also wore a nude skirt slip because it was windy). I plan to pair this with a different belt soon.

Have a great week!

Three [Great] Purchases

Lately I've been really trying to pare down my closet. What I notice is that I tend to wear the same pieces over and over and some are left collecting dustsometimes for a year or more (cue my embarrassment here). I've been giving away pieces I never wear to friends or donating them to charity. The items I give away actually prompt me to evaluate future purchases.

When I shop nowadays, I'm much more likely to pass on things I might have purchased in the past. If it's "just cute" it may not make the cut anymore. I'll even carry items around the store or put them in my cart, only to decide that I really don't need the item, or have something like it already, or that it's simply just not fantastic. I still make a purchase or two that I end up regretting, but I'm working on it.

The outfit I wore yesterday is literally the perfect example of closet keepers. I have worn my navy blue J.Crew sweater at least 100 times. The striped pencil skirt is my most-worn pencil skirt for the past year. The marled gray top, a newer purchase from Madewell is simple and classic. Most importantly, I love the way it fits and drapes. Sometimes it's worth it to pay a little more for something that just works on your body.

I'm so glad I invested in these three pieces--- I know they'll be long term staples that will be worn for years to come.

Do you have pieces that you've owned and loved for years? How does reflecting on those purchases shape your future purchases?

The Pom Pom Scarf

When I posted this selfie of Harper and me on Instagram today, a lot of you asked about my pretty scarf so I thought I'd share my outfit.
The scarf was actually a birthday gift from Megan and it couldn't be more me! I absolutely love the colors and the navy blue pom pom trim is the perfect touch that makes it feel special and different. Today I paired it with a crisp white linen dress.

A Floral Blouse

When this J.Crew blouse first appeared online and in stores, I loved it so much that I bought it even though I was about 8 months pregnant. I knew I would regret not buying it and I was right! I really love the unique print and fun, bright colors on this top. I gravitate a lot towards emerald/bright greens so I knew my closet had to have this.

Though J.Crew no longer carries it, J.Crew Factory introduced it this season (yay!) and it can be yours for just $37 (on sale!) I think this top pairs well with both prints and solids, so pretty versatile!

The (Ripped) LBD

This morning after a few days of sporting my "uniform" (slim pants, a dress shirt and blazer) I was in the mood to dress up a little bit. I looked through my closet and pulled out this sheath dress from Zara that I've loved for years. I even wore this one while pregnant because it's so roomy!

What I didn't notice was that the bottom of the dress must have gotten caught on something awhile ago and it was all ripped at one of the spots in the back at the bottom. I don't think it's even saveable since the rip is pretty intense and frayed the chiffon-like fabric. Sigh. We had a good run, LBD.

The Spotted Watercolor Dress

I didn't buy a lot of clothes in 2013. I was pregnant for some of it, on maternity leave for some of it and then uninspired for much of the year. Sure, I bought a few pieces here and there, but nothing like before.

While I'm so excited about all of the spring and summer clothes in stores right now, I can't help but love the fact that I'm also rediscovering pieces in my closet. I feel like every outfit post lately is a throwback to things I bought nearly two years ago or longerI guess I made some decent choices (and plenty of bad ones too!)

Here's a Presley Skye dress I bought at Nordstrom quite some time ago paired with a Zara blazer that I've worn quite a bit.
dress- presley skye via nordstrom (similar, this is so pretty too)  | shoes- j.crew factory  | blazer- zara (similar- on sale,  this banana republic one is STUNNING)
I love the pops of watercolor-like brights and pastels in this dress. Definitely a winner and so easy to wear.

Happy Wednesday!

Our Weekend...

Harper's 11 month update is going to be a little late because poor baby girl has been sick.

Daycare called us Wednesday afternoon to let us know that she woke up from a nap with a 102 temperature. They took it again five minutes later, and it was down to 100.5. Kevin picked her up and I came home earlier that day.

We had noticed that she had a few (what we thought at the time were pimples) on her face and her temperature was between 99 and 100, but I thought she was just getting sick because she also had a congested and runny nose.

The next morning I posted a photo of Harper's "pimples" on instagram and quickly many of my awesome readers mentioned that it looked like hand foot and mouth disease. I didn't know much about it or the symptoms, but after a quick google, it was clear this was a possibility. We bathed her the night before and she only had the red dots on her facebut the next morning, an hour after I posted that photo on IG, she literally had blisters/red dots on her hands and feet, torso and her bottom. At that point I was 99% sure it was HFM. We made an appointment with our pediatrician who confirmed the diagnosis.

Although it's tough to see her body with bumps and rashes all over, I have to say I feel blessed that she did not get HFM sores inside of her actual mouth. I know a lot of babies who get these are unable to eat because the sores cause pain, whereas Harper just has rashes on her skin that didn't hurt or itch. We gave her tylenol about twice a day for the low grade fever and because she was fussier than usual.

She slept a lot for the past four days. Sometimes she would nap for 2.5 hours. I think her body just needed the extra sleep to recover. Plus, when she's with us, she loves to snuggle and sleep on one of us and typically she sleeps longer on us than in her crib (for naps). We love that she still loves to cuddle like that, especially because now that's she's on the go she wants to be "free" a lot.

She was in really good spirits on Sunday and back to playing as much as usual. Her rash on her body is pretty much gone and the blisters on her hands and feet seem to be crusting over. Her face is healing too, though the spots are still very red.
(this was when the rashes were really bad)

On Saturday night I went to the Galleria with Candice. I hadn't been in a really long time so we decided to grab some food and get some shopping time in. Nordstrom was having a 25% off sale on designer shoes and I've been waiting for the Tory Burch sandals to go on sale for forever.

First I went to J.Crew where I tried on this gorgeous white dress. Unfortunately the waist was too big on my normal size but the size down didn't fit me in the chest (in the photo I am holding about 2 inches of the fabric in the back to make it appear how I would want it to fit). I may wait for it to go on clearance and then pay for alterations because it's beautiful. It is currently 30% off so check it out here if you like it too!
Then I went to Baby Gap and scored these pretties for Harper all for 40% off! I was surprised to see a promo in the store for all of the new arrivals because I feel like the online promos usually happen more often.
printed romper (sold out online---but here is a similar one)
pintuck dress (on sale for $19.99 and absolutely gorgeous!)

After Baby Gap we went to Nordstrom so I could try on the TB sandals and that's where Candice discovered these gorgeous Jessica Simpson heels. I was thisclose to buying them but then I talked myself out of them (now regretting that a bit) because our daycare has a policy of having to take your shoes off and I hate bending down to unbuckle them when I'm already carrying my 22 lb baby and a cooler bag full of bottles and food.

Some of my readers suggested I wear flip flops and change into heels and I may try that though it's just so easy to slip on a pair of pumps because they come off hands-free. I have several pairs of shoes right now with ankle straps and I never wear them because of the fuss to get them on and off at drop-off and pick-up. Maybe once she transitions to the toddler room the no shoes rule will no longer apply. If you want to buy these pretties, you can order them here. I may just order them too...
But the good news is that I got these fab Tory Burch Miller nude sandals for a sweet 25% off PLUS I had a Nordstrom note for $20!
Lastly, I picked up a hair product one of my co-workers recommended by Aveda. It's a heat protectant and helps with split ends (which hello, is basically my life). I will report back on it soon.
I hope you all had a great weekend! Thanks for everyone who sent will wishes for Harper!
...she's feeling much better!
