Motivation Mondays: Maja Launches Her Health & Fitness Blog, HautePNK

I think this is my most exciting Motivation Monday...ever!  My gorgeous friend Maja was the first to ever be featured in Motivation Mondays and for more than a year, I begged her incessantly to start a blog.

Maja is a huge inspiration to me because in addition to living an extremely healthy lifestyle (she and her husband even grow their own vegetables), she is also incredibly kind, intelligent and beautiful inside and out.

I annoyed Maja enough and I am thrilled to tell you that she finally launched her very own blog, HautePNK!

Maja's blog focuses on health and fitness, with a little style and beauty mixed in.  The best part is that she shares her workouts (her body is amazing---and she works hard for it!) and also shows photos of how to do each move.  If you ever don't know what to do at the gym, you can use your phone to pull up HautePNK and try one of Maja's workouts.

In celebration of the launch of her very own blog, I asked Maja to share with us some of her fitness updates, favorite foods and overall fitness advice and motivation.

Over a year ago, you were my first Motivation Monday feature---I think you pretty much inspired the entire series---so what made you finally decide to start your own blog (after me badgering you for well over a year?)
I am a big blog reader, but had never envisioned being one myself until that first Motivation Monday post. Veronikas Blushing is what really sparked the fire! The one thing I admire most from you and other blogs I follow is that they really earn my trust. You see a real person with real life experiences and over time you trust their feedback. In parallel, I had a growing number of friends seeking advice on workouts, recipes, products I use, etc. It kind of all clicked together and realized I wanted to take the love I had for blogs and action it with something I am passionate about. I love the community, support, and the feedback from like-minded people. I think most of all, I wanted to take the opportunity to share all that Ive learned (and am learning) through real life experiences to reach anyone who is looking for it.

What is the overall goal of your blog?
As clich as it sounds, if my blog reaches even one person and positively impacts them or helps them reach their goals in any way shape or form, I feel Ill have fulfilled the intent. The thought of someone changing their lifestyle to get in shape and eat better while using some of my feedback as a guide, blows me away. I want to create a positive community where we can support one another and share feedback.

As your blog grows, what kinds of posts can we expect to see from you?
HautePNK is still in its infancy stages. I tried to start with a vast taste of whats to come when I launched. In short, it will have a strong focus on workouts, diet and nutrition, tons of tips and tricks that work for me - its what I LOVE most! Ill also plan to post reviews of products I love (and ones I don't). Also, some outfits of the days/nights and maybe the odd shopping haul. Itll almost be a mash of all the things I find most interesting in the blogs I follow. I am hugely open to feedback and requests too.

Will you also blog about style and beauty? You have amazing makeup/hair/everything!
I most definitely intend to! Some of the most common questions I get are about hair and makeup, so I figure Ill consolidate my response and just make a blog post about it. Im not one of those quirky people who can pull off various different unique/adventurous styles, but I think there is still something nice and classic about the girly girl conservative look. Maybe this blog and the people I meet through it will eventually take me out of my comfort zone and Ill try some new things.

I love how you show photos of how to do all of the moves---it's so easy to look up the workouts on your iPhone when you get to the gym---what inspired you to make your blog so user-friendly?
When I really started thinking of a blog, one of the things I wanted to put lots of attention on was planning out was the site map, usability and most importantly reader experience. I have spent the better part of my career in technology, so it was natural for me. It doesnt follow the standard blog format where the whole post is on the landing page, but I had this vision all along, so I went with the tiles. I wanted to make a nice browsing experience (I feel its easy to browse through older posts), and I put lots of attention in the details (i.e the animations when you scroll over the post name, the custom twitter bird, swipe feature from a smart phone/iPad etc).

What is the best fitness advice you've ever gotten?
This is an easy question because there are a couple of definitive things that I was told and think of every single day I mulled over this and couldnt pick just one, so here they are:
1.     It isnt the number of reps you do to feel a burn, its the number of reps you  push out after you start feeling the burn
o    This one statement stands out in my mind every time I work out and just give it that extra push. As soon as I think I am done because I can start feeling it, thats when I know I have to step up and keep going. That is where the results are hiding.
2.     PATIENCE
o    Patience truly is a virtue. A lot of people are really good at starting a program and being dedicated, but what I find mostly (true for me some days as well) is that you think that youre going to start seeing amazing results within the first week. Reality check: you need to be patient and trust the system. Keep going and do not get distracted remain focused and be patient.

What are some of your current favorite snacks?
I snack a lot! When I post food journals to give a glimpse into some of my daily meals, you will find that I snack in between every meal. Some of my favourites are baby carrots, bananas, apples, berries, salads and of coure; homemadeoat bars.

How about dinners?
FISH! I love cod, haddock, tilapia, and salmon the most. I will post some great healthy recipes for baking fish and their benefits. Other than that, I find some tiny pleasures in having breakfast-y items in the evening, so I might make some omelettes or scrambled eggs. Alongside, I will always have a salad, zucchini or some kind of veggie. For carbs, it usually a small sweet potato, rice or something like that.

Tell us about your vegetable garden? What made you decide to grow one? What vegetables do you grow?
I grew up with my dad planting a huge garden every summer. I distinctly remember the difference in taste between everything we grew at home and what we were forced to buy in the winters from a grocery store (same with my husband when he grew up). So when we got married and bought our first home we immediately converted over half of our back yard into a vegetable garden. We dont use any pesticides and all the soil and seeds we use are certified organic. We grow TONS of lettuce, kale, swiss chard, cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, eggplant, hot peppers, green onions, beets, radishes and spinach. Again, I plan on doing a whole tutorial on the garden and how little of space you actually need to grow a large amount of vegetables.

Your husband is so supportive of you---what is his involvement with the blog?
Hes amazing I am truly blessed. From the first minute I mentioned that I wanted to start a blog hes always offered his advice and infinite support. He owns a full service design and advertising company and he took me on in his spare time, then had his developers build the dream. The team did an amazing job through design, build and testing. I am so thankful to all of them!

Where do you see your blog a year from now?
If someone told me Id even have a blog one year ago, I probably wouldnt have believed them. So thinking a year ahead, I am hoping that I will have developed a community that can learn and share with me. I have no intention of slowing down and will continue to always share my honest opinion, feedback and tips.

What other interests do you have other than fitness that your readers might want to know about?
I have a deep appreciation for art and music. I love high fashion. I love movies, but not TV (we don't even have cable or the basic channels at home). I aspire to be an advanced seamstress one day and admire anyone who is really good at sewing. I adore baking! I never bake for myself, but jump on the opportunity to bring a treat when we are invited to a party or dinner. I'm also very crafty and put a lot of effort into something as little as decorating a cake or wrapping a gift.

Thank you Maja, for motivating us this Monday! I am personally so thrilled that we will all have your blog as such an amazing resource to learn more about fitness and health so thank you for all of the time and effort you put into it!

Motivation Mondays: Jamie Gives Us the Lowdown on CrossFit

A couple of months ago I blogged about CrossFit and how my husband and I tested out a class. In the end, it wasn't for us, but one of the reasons I was inspired to try it in the first place was because of my friend Jamie.

Jamie and her husband have been doing CrossFit for awhile now and because I like to share a variety of different Motivation Monday workouts and experiences, I asked Jamie to share with us a little more about what she does to stay fit and how she stays motivated.

Jamie is also a fellow Houston blogger---you can visit her over at J-Fit.  She's got lots of great fitness advice, recipes and home decor posts that I know you ladies will love.

Meet Jamie, looking gorgeous on her wedding day!

How old are you and what do you do?
Im 26 (I think, ha! I always have to do the math) and I'm an Administrative Coordinator.

Have you always been into fitness? If not, why did you start?
I did not get info fitness until getting engaged in December of 2009. Everyone wants to look stunning in their wedding dress and knowing the big day was coming really gave me the motivation I needed to start working out. I tried everything from group fitness classes to boot camps and even worked with a personal trainer before finding my fitness home in CrossFit.

How do you stay motivated?
I stay motivated by seeing continual improvement in myself. I keep a log of benchmark workouts on my blog and also document PRs. Its always nice to look back and see how far Ive come and know I can only improve from where I am.

Why did you start CrossFit and how long have you been doing it for?
I started CrossFit in December 2010 because my husband was addicted and I wanted to check it out for myself. I will never forget my first day; I wanted to run for the hills. Thankfully I stuck it out and I now have been consistently going 3+ days a week for almost 20 months.

What do you like about CrossFit and what has it taught you about yourself?
My favorite thing about CrossFit is hands down the community aspect of it. Through CrossFit I have made countless friends and had so many wonderful experiences outside of just working out. I also like that I dont have to do any of the planning and I know that I can just show up to my classes and that Im going to get a good work out in. I know myself and if were up to me I would never do another burpee or wall ball.

What do you dislike (if anything)?
Burpees!! (JKokay not really!) The only thing I sometimes dislike about CrossFit is that it is for the most part done outside or inside without AC. It gets seriously hot in Houston so hydration is key.

Tell us what a typical day of eating looks like for you?
A typical day of food for me starts with a smoothie with frozen fruit and coconut milk as the base for breakfast. Around 10:00am I have my morning snack which is almost always almonds followed by lunch around noon. Every Sunday I make a big crock pot of chicken chili which I then eat every day for lunch. Its not 100% paleo because it contains beans but its quick and healthy so I look past the beans. For an afternoon snack (usually around 2:00pm) I always eat a piece of fruit. If Im going to the gym after work Ill also eat a Larabar close to 4:00pm. Dinner is usually a quick combination of meats and veggies.

What are some of your favorite healthy snacks?
Unsalted natural almonds are my go to snack because they really fill me up and take no prep time. I am also a big fan of Larabars and fresh fruit. I feel that snacks and meals that are simple tend to work best for me.

What are some of your favorite indulgences? (in moderation, of course)
I am a Thai food junkie. I could eat Thai noodle dishes and crispy spring rolls every day for the rest of my life and be extremely happy.

You tried the paleo diet---do you still follow it? What are the pros and cons?
When I first started paleo, I followed the diet 100% and I saw fantastic results. I felt better, looked better and was performing better in WODs (work out of the day) but I did not have a life outside of CrossFit. One definite con of paleo is that I found it to be restricting in that I didnt have the will power to say no to the chips and queso my friends would order if we went out so I just wouldnt go. I found it annoying to have to quiz wait staff over and over about what came in the salad when half the time they got it wrong anyways. Today I try and stick to 80/100 which is 80% paleo, 100% of the time.  I eat paleo when I can but I dont let my diet get in the way of opportunities to spend time with friends and family.

(this picture is kind of awesome...okay, super awesome)

How do you make the time to balance staying active with your other responsibilities and interests?
Plan, plan, plan. I have found that I need a lot of structure in my daily routine to help balance everything out. I go straight to the gym after work so that I have no excuse not to go. I find that if I plan time to work out, I wont make other plans that prevent me from getting that work out in.

What are your fitness goals for the next year?
Im looking forward to training for a half marathon once the Houston heat lets up a bit! I entered the lottery for the Houston half and didnt get in but I have my eye on the Sugar Land half at the end of January! I would also like to be able to do handstand push ups within the next year, so I guess thats my CrossFit goal.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I have lots of accomplishments Im really proud such as graduation college, moving out of my parents house, getting married, purchasing a house with my husband so its hard to pick just one. Picking a fitness accomplishment is however much easier. Im most proud of myself for being able to do a pull-up. I never dreamed the day would come when I would be able to say that I could do a pull-up but after some time and a lot of hard work, Im happy to say that I can!

Thank you Jamie for motivating us this Monday!  If you have any questions for Jamie, please leave them below or go and visit her over at J-Fit.

Motivation Mondays: Define Revolution Spin Class & Erin Stewart Shares Her Favorite Summer Recipes & Nutrition Tips

If you watched my workout DVD review video on my YouTube channel over the weekend, youll know that fitness is a huge priority for me right now. So much so that Ive started to work with a personal trainer again to get back into tip top shape.

One of my struggles has always been getting cardio into my workouts. I love weight lifting and toning workouts but never enjoyed running, the elliptical or pretty much anything else cardio related.

When I was invited to try out Define Studios new Define Revolution class at their West U location, I was excited but also nervous because I hadnt taken a spin class in years. This past May, I purchased an unlimited month long package at Define (River Oaks location) and took barre classes about five days a week so I was familiar with the studio but not with the Revolution classes which are exclusive to the West U location.

I didnt really know what to expect when I came to class last Wednesday but all I can say is that once the class was over, I felt like I had literally bathed in my own sweat because the workout was that intense.  I forgot how it felt to sweat THAT hard during a workout. Of course I sweat when I do my weight training because I do incorporate cardio elements..but this was a whole new level of sweat (ie: I could only take this class on the nights before I wash my hair because there is no way you can skip washing it after this class).

?

Heres what I loved about the class:
  • The room---its super dark and has these really pretty lanterns lit. I loved that the workout was almost in the dark---I could see the instructor but it was dark enough to where it really created a great vibe. It felt relaxing and you almost felt more secure because you didnt have to worry about catching a glimpse of your sweaty-self in the mirrors.
  • The music was awesome
  • The instructor Erin, was motivational and high energy
  • The workout was challenging---as a spinning newbie, I couldnt put my resistance up as much as some people could but I still got an incredible workout.
The only downside to Defines West U location is parking, but there is a lot across the street you can use (I got there early and was able to park in the main lot).

I asked Erin from Define if she should share some of her best nutrition tips with my readers and she happily obliged.  Here is a little more information about Erin so you know about her background:

Erin O Leary Stewart is a graduate of the Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts in New York City. She has spent time working in the raw food and vegan kitchen at Pure Food and Wine and owned and operated her own healthy cookie and granola company, OCookies Wholesome Bites. As DEFINEfoods Head Chef, Erin brings this expertise to DEFINE West University by providing food education and health-supportive cooking classes to further balance healthy lifestyles.

Tell us what you do at Define and how you got started with barre-based workouts.
I am currently a Lead Instructor and Teacher/Trainer for DEFINEbody and DEFINErevolution. I earned a BFA in Dance Performance at Southern Methodist University in Dallas where I also studied kinesiology and spent the subsequent eight years dancing professionally throughout the greater New York area. A desire to stay in shape throughout audition seasons led me to a fitness class inspired by former accomplished ballet dancer Lotte Berk, called Physique 57, where I spent several years as an instructor, before moving here to Houston and discovering DEFINE.

What are some healthy snacks every woman should pack to make good food choices during the workweek?
My 'on-the-go' snacks are Larabars, Justin's Nut Butter packs with an apple or banana, and raw walnuts or almonds.

What are a few of your favorite healthy summer recipes?
My favorite recipes these days take advantage of all of the fresh summer produce (tomatoes, corn, eggplant, peaches, etc.). Here are a few of my latest recipes:

How important is nutrition in regards to your overall health and fitness plan?
Physical fitness can only take you to a certain point. For overall health, nutrition starts at the home. What you eat is just as important as any physical movement you give yourself. Your food choices can affect both your mind and your body, and can fully determine how you feel throughout your day.

If you wake up and reach for the big coffee and sugary muffin, you will most likely crash come mid-afternoon, which could then lead to more poor choices in order to keep going. Instead, have a bowl of grounding oatmeal or grains with goji berries and pure maple syrup with green tea. The low-glycemic sweeteners and antioxidants from the goji berries and green tea will help to keep a steady energy and a clear mind.

Having a disciplined outlook on eating, versus a controlled outlook, can make all of the difference as well. If you're truly craving that sugary muffin, there is no need to deprive yourself. Instead, have your muffin this time and have the oatmeal bowl the next. As long as you wake up every morning with the intentions to be the very best person that you can be, knowing that you will probably make some mistakes along the way, you will lead a long, healthy and sustainable life.

How can busy women, moms and wives make healthy eating a priority? What are some tips and tricks to help us stay on track? All it takes is a little bit of prep. Head to your local farmer's market weekly and prep your veggies ahead of time. Sundays and Mondays are my days to lie out meal plans for the week. I'll wash veggies and cut up fruit to have in the fridge ready to go. A big key is to roast off veggies in the oven and make a big pot of quinoa or rice at the start of the week. This makes throwing together one-skillet dinners so quick and easy because you've done the step that takes the longest ahead of time.

Any other tips and tricks to add?
I never make just enough for one meal. All sauces and dressings that I prep for a dish, I will make enough to keep in the fridge to use throughout the week with other dishes. Trust me, you won't be able to get enough of my tahini dressing (from the Roasted Eggplant & Chickpea Quinoa Skillet recipe)! It goes well on everything from green salads to veggie stir-fries to freshly baked whole grain toast.

I have asked Erin to become a regular contributor on my blog so I'm going to have her answer a couple of questions each month or two related to diet and nutrition so we can all learn to live a healthier lifestyle.  If you have any questions, please leave them below and thank you Erin for motivating us this Monday! You can learn more about Define classes at: http://www.definebody.com/.  Thank you Erin for motivating us this Monday!

Motivation Mondays: Jill's Slimdown

Todays "Motivation Mondays" features Jill and showcases her incredible weight loss and fitness story!  I know Jill because back in the day, we both used to work at the same tanning salon chain.  We had kept in touch via Facebook and when I saw the incredible before and after pictures she posted on her wall last week (talk about bravery!) I emailed her immediately to ask her if she would share with my readers what she did to lose weight and get fit.

As with all of my Motivation Monday posts---this is just how one person did it---there are so many ways to get fit and reach your goals---with that said, here is Jills story!

Jill is 27 years old, lives in Canada and works as a Group Benefits Customer Care Representative.

Jill's Incredible BEFORE & AFTER
she was170lbs on the left and 145lbs on the right
Congratulations on your incredible weight loss and fitness results!  First, tell us what made you decide to finally start eating well and working out---what made you hit rock bottom?
Hi V!  Thanks for the congratulations.  It's rewarding!  I'll tell you first of all that I've never been a big gym person.  Last summer my doctor prescribed me a medication that made me gain 30lbs instantly.  I got really puffy, bloated, uncomfortable and self conscious.  I joined the gym back in September and saw no results in 6 months...In fact, I gained.  I was starting to believe that either I was doing something wrong or I was just going to continue to grow, no matter what I did to prevent it.  One night I was at the gym and I saw (or I thought I saw!) my friend Dr. Heather Voisin (disclaimer: Voisin is affiliated with the brand ISAGENIX).  It turns out it wasn't her, but I was so excited that I came home and emailed her how I thought I saw her and how excited I was!  Needless to say, she was telling me about this amazing cleanse she was doing to help release some of the unwanted waste from our bodies and that weight loss was one of the perks.  Awesome!  I needed to know more so we set up a date.

How did you decide on what kind of eating and workout plan you were going to commit to?
Dr. Voisin was telling me about the importance of cleansing and there is a reason that traditional diets never work.  Toxins are stored in our fat cells. If we can remove the toxins, we can remove the fat as well. So, I decided to do a 30 day nutritional cleanse with ISAGENIX.  Along with my new cleanse, I was already going to the gym.  I picked up a 4-day-a-week schedule while on the cleanse to kick-start my weight loss.  I was losing approx 4lbs / week in toxic waste from my cells.

Did you gradually start eating better and working out or did you go full force from the start? I went full force into the 30 day cleanse. It is a combination of nutritionally dense meal replacements with healthy snacks and a healthy meal every day.

Tell us about what your weekly workouts look like I do a lot of the stepper and the bicycle.  Alternate days (or lazy days) I do weights.  Sometimes I do a combo of both.  Depends on how I feel.  The odd time I go swimming and I always go for a steam after!!  Usually I go approx 3 times a week and I am usually doing my cardio/cool down for approx 45 - 60 min.

Tell us about what a typical day of eating looks like for you
Breakfast:
I have a shot of this awesome drink called "Ionix Supreme".  This helps start my day off properly and helps with the stress. Next I have a Vanilla shake with a sprinkle of cinnamon for extra flavour.
Snack: Hardboiled egg, 2 x sliced turkey meat, 2 x non-processed cheddar cheese
Lunch: Another shake for my lunch.
Dinner: I honestly eat whatever I want for dinner.  Mind you, it's not fried or fast food.  I eat normal things like skinless chicken, pasta, veggies etc. but the quantities are small and just enough to make me feel full.
Beverages: I mainly drink water. Coffee with milk.  Sometimes I cheat and drink ginger ale every now and again because I love the carbonation.

What are some of your favorite healthy snacks?
I enjoy eating fruit. I've taken a recent liking to blueberries.  I usually have them in my fridge along with raspberries.  I catch myself eating them when I watch tv instead of chips or cookies. I find cutting the fortified sugars makes me not even crave them.  Instead when I have a sweet tooth, I go for those blueberries!

Were friends and family members supportive of your new healthier lifestyle? My family and friends were very supportive. Some were skeptical because sadly North Americans do not know very much about cleansing. Most if not all other countries do some form of cleansing and we are one of the unhealthiest nations in the world so there has to be a link. Some of my close family members joined the cleanse with me and have been just as successful with their results as mine.  Rewarding!

What advice do you have for a woman who would like to be healthier but lacks the motivation?  What caused you to finally have the drive to succeed?
I think the best advice I could give for someone else would be to make the drastic change right then and there.  Don't make gradual changes because it's easy to fall back into old habits.  You know you need to do something for your health.  Don't start tomorrow.  Start today.  Get the ball going.  It becomes habit.  As much as I didn't want to join the gym, I knew I had to.  Once I started noticing the results, I became driven.  During my cleanse, people were starting to notice the weight come off on a weekly basis.  That's amazing!!!

What can you do now that you weren't able to do before you lost the weight and got fit?
I have never told anyone this, so this is a little uncomfortable for me, but I got to the point where my thighs were so big that I couldn't even cross my legs when sitting down.  I didn't even know that was possible.  Believe it or not, I found that very upsetting.  I can clearly say after I released 25lbs (and still losing!) I can fit into some of my size 4 jeans again (from a size 8-10) and cross my legs :)  The other things I have noticed is that I am not in pain while sitting at my desk job from my stomach hanging over my pants.  I didn't even realize being overweight for my height caused physical discomfort.  What a horrible feeling.  On the benefit, my stamina is higher and my energy levels are greater as opposed to when I wasn't being active.

What are your goals as you continue to pursue a healthier lifestyle? My goals to continue to pursue a healthier lifestyle is to continue to use these ISAGENIX products.  They really are the reason for my success in the weight loss, energy level increase and stamina.  I now help other people reach their goals. I am so thrilled with my results that I want others to feel and look as great as I do!

Jill's weight loss progression:?

Other than this incredible accomplishment---what are you most proud of in your life?
Honestly, losing this weight.  I never ever thought I could have gained weight, let alone take it off. I'm still in the process of releasing some more toxins and waste from my system, but I know what it is that I need to do and I have the tools to succeed. Anybody can do this.

What are some of your best "stay on track" tips?
This is something I'm trying to figure out myself right now.  I just told my dad the other day that I think I'm going to try running (which I hate running), but I need to change up my routine and give it a fair shot at trying to melt those pesky pounds that don't come off!  Who knows, maybe I'll turn into a runner?!

If you'd like to learn more about the products Jill used in addition to exercise, please see this linkThank you so much for sharing your story, Jill!  If you have any questions for Jill, please leave them below and I will ask her to come and answer them.

Disclaimer: I am adding this due to the response I've gotten about this post. I want to make it clear that I am not affiliated with Isagenix nor do I advocate for cleanses of any kind, by any brand.  I am sharing one person's experience in using this product as part of a 30-day challenge to get on a better path to health and fitness.  I do not have anything against using a cleanse for a short period of time in combination with eating real, whole foods and working out ---with the ultimate goal of learning to eat healthy and exercise and have a healthier lifestyle overall, for the long run. I do not promote or advocate the long-term use of cleansing products and have never used, and do not plan to use cleansing products of any kind.
