Boon Flair Highchair Review

When it came time to buy a highchair for Harper, I was admitedly overwhelmed by the amount of choices on the market. I scoured Baby Bargains, read amazon reviews and searched my favorite blogs for recommendations.

I finally narrowed our search down to three choices--- the OXO Sprout, the Stokke Tripp Trapp and the Boon Flair, which is the one we ended up purchasing.

I quite liked the design of the OXO Sprout as well as the Stokke high chair, but there were a few things keeping me from pulling the trigger on either of them.

The OXO Sprout doesn't have wheels and doesn't adjust its height, so those two factors put it out of the running since we wanted something that would work with the height of our kitchen island, since that's where we eat most of the time.  The Stokke Tripp Trapp had a few concerning reviews about tipping over, which I hadn't read in any other highchair reviews, and it also didn't have wheels or an adjustable height, so that put it out of the running.

Overall, we were looking for a chair that:
a) was easy to clean
b) had wheels (easy to move around)
c) simple/sleek design and no fabric cover
d) adjustable height

The Boon Flair was the one!  It doesn't take up a lot of space which is a great perk (it has a round base that can slide easily under a table or kitchen island).

Babies are messy and so ease of cleaning was of great importance to us. The seat of the Boon is one solid piece of plastic that doesn't have nooks and crannies---it's simple and sleek which makes wiping it down after dinner super fast and no-fuss.  It does have a removeable foam pad that is also extremely easy to clean with a wet cloth.  Most nights I don't even have to remove the foam, I just wipe it down because the highchair tray and Harper's bib (we use these ones)  catches most of the food that falls down. The best part is that the foam doesn't have to come completley off to clean it. I just lift it off enough to get any mess off, wipe and place right back to how it was. You don't have to take the entire foam pad off or throw it in the washer like a lot of highchairs you see with fabric. It seems like you'd have to throw those in the wash nearly every night to get the food off, especially purees�.and we already do enough laundry as it is!

The fact that the Boon has wheels is a huge bonus. I feed Harper while sitting on one of the barstools at our kitchen island and it's so easy to pull her highchair towards me.  It's also fantastic when I'm cleaning---I simply roll the chair out of my way as I vacuum.  For our Christmas dinner, we just wheeled Harper right into the dining room and lowered the height of the chair so we could eat as a family. It was perfect!

The adjustable height of the chair was a big selling point for us. Knowing we wanted to use the chair near our kitchen island, we wanted to have the option of extending its height and very few highchairs on the market have that option.

I should also mention that the straps are easy to use and easy to wash. That's the only part of the chair that ever goes in the washer and truthfully, the bib prevents food from getting onto the highchair straps 90% of the time so we don't need to wash them often. 

And lastly, the tray of the Boon is so easy to use---and can be removed using just one hand, which is a wonderfully convenient feature. I think most people are shocked to find how small the Boon's tray is, but we have found this to be a benefit as it's easy for Harper to access her food now that she's eating more solids and feeding herself more.

We absolutely love the Boon Flair and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a sleek, easy-to-clean and versatile highchair. 

The only "con" I can find is that the brake for the highchair does not work well on hardwood�but this has honestly never been a problem. It doesn't move or slide away easily if the brake is on, but if you push it, it won't stay completey in place. Like I said, we've never had any issues so really, for us, it's nonissue, but I did want to bring it up since I want this review to be encompassing of all of the chair's features.

In terms of style, I do love the look of the chair but wish it came in more color options and I wish the base wasn't that silver color�or that it was a shiny silver versus the matte it is now, kind of like Bloom's Fresco highchair  which at nearly $500 was much more than I wanted to pay, though it's quite attractive for a highchair.

Baby Feeding Essentials

When Harper started solids, I read a lot of blogs and scoured product reviews on Amazon to select the best of the tried, tested and true baby feeding items for her. I thought it would be nice to share what's been working for us so far.

A lot of you have asked how we like our Boon Flair highchair, and we absolutely love it, but I'm going to save the full review for another post.  This is going to focus on items we use for feeding.

Munchkin 4 Pack White Hot Safety Spoon 

I love these spoons because they turn white if food is too hot. Since I make all of Harper's purees, we freeze them and microwave to serve them. I always test on my wrist as well, but this is extra reassurance that the food is not too hot. If it is, I briefly stir in an ice cube and it very quickly cools from hot to warm.

Beaba First Stage Spoons

These spoons are awesome and we use them daily. You can even see that the middle one is stained from carrots. They are soft yet firm enough to feed purees perfectly. The size is wonderful and Harper loves to chew on them and hold them. I also love the design. Not that it matters, but it doesn't hurt that they're the cutest baby spoons out there.  I like that the tips are all silicone and not just silicone coated.

OXO Tot Food Storage Containers

These containers are safe for the freezer and microwave and are BPA-free. We use them for Harper's solids at daycare. The lids snap on nice and tight and they come with a little tray to help organize them. 

Vital Baby Feeding Bowls

I'm obesessed with these bowls! They're also BPA-free and microwave-safe. I just pop some frozen puree into them and in less than a minute food is ready. They're easy to hold and just the right depth. Highly recommend them.

Boon Spill Catcher Bowl & Green Sprouts Silicone Bowl

The Green Sprouts silicone bowl is a nice alternative to plastic (even though all of our stuff is BPA-free, some people still prefer to avoid plastic).  It's on the smaller side but it's the perfect size for mashing foods like bananas and blueberries. The Boon bowl we started to use recently and it has a suction at the bottom so it sticks to her highchair tray---it's great now that Harper is learning to feed herself a little bit. I love the "catcher" feature too.

 Boon Edgeless Dish

This is one we haven't used yet---but plan to when she can self-feed more effectively. I like that it is shallow and stays on the tray, making it easier for baby to self-feed.

Bumkins Waterproof Superbib

These bibs are an absolute must-have for feeding solids. They are waterproof, are easily washed and have a little pocket that catches any food that falls. Need I say more? They are absolute perfection---and come in precious designs, to boot!

Born Free Sippy Cup & Nuby Sippy Cup

We are just now really starting to integrate sippy cups---we started by just giving her one to explore and play with. Then, we showed her that water comes out. She doesn't quite have the hang of it yet and I don't want to put breastmilk into a sippy yet.  I'm going to ask our pediatrician at our 9 month appointment if we should offer water, transition to breastmilk in a sippy�etc.  I like that these have the silicone vs. hard nipples. I have also heard some babies prefer straw sippy cups so if you have any you love, please let me know in the comments.
