Recent Outfits

I'm not going to lie, I pretty much wear my GAP maternity skinnies everyday.  I was starting to get back into wearing dresses and then another cold front hit and I just gave up. These days, I just wear what's comfortable (and warm!) and these pants have made dressing for pregnancy easy.  They go with almost everything, they fit great and they're super comfy. I've been wearing them since second tri and couldn't rave more about them.  They're not as fun and exciting as a brightly colored or printed skirt, but they get the job done and with just two months left in my pregnancy, buying maternity clothes isn't high on my priority list (though I'd love these pants in pretty much every color, they aren't available).

These are a few of my recent outfits:

GAP pants, Kate Spade shoes, Liz Lange for Target maternity tank, Aritzia blazer
Forever 21 necklace (I extended the length with another chain)

GAP pants, Tory Burch Reva flats, Old Navy chambray shirt (in tall),
Artizia blazer, T&J designs necklace (c/o)

GAP pants, Zara flats, Forever 21 v-neck tee, Banana Republic cardigan,
Stella & Dot necklace (c/o)

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

30 Weeks!

I've mentioned before that I'm lucky to have access to infant care, infant CPR and other classes via the hospital I will be delivering at so it will be nice to have some hands-on instruction and advice from experts.

But one thing no one can teach you, is how to be a parent. It's the most challenging role you'll ever take on in your life---and you can read all the books you want and ask others about their experiences, but at the end of the day, you make decisions (hopefully) based on what's right for your family.

Some of you were probably fortunate to grow up in great households with wonderful parents who served as fantastic role models for raising your own child---but a lot of us didn't, and it's something that I feel really conflicted about. I sometimes ask myself...how can I be a good parent when I didn't have strong role models in my own?

Now, I don't want this post to make it sound like I had a horrible childhood. It wasn't perfect, or even ideal, and at times it was downright tough, but I do have some wonderful memories too. But unconditional love was something I struggled to feel [from my parents] and I cannot fathom making my own child feel that way, even for a second.  I won't get into the specifics, but I have no relationship with my father and my mother and I do have a relationship but it's certainly not where I'd hope it would be...but it is what it is.  No family is perfect of course, but I will fully admit that it makes me a little emotional and even a tad bit envious when I see families that are super close, supportive and loving towards one another---because that's what everyone deserves. I'm also thankful to be part of a very loving family through my marriage to my husband, which truly made all the difference for me when I moved to Texas.

Early into my adulthood, I made the wise choice to attend therapy sessions that helped me accept and somewhat move on from my past (I say somewhat, because I don't think I'll ever truly, fully and completely "move on" but it's enough that it no longer consumes me).  I haven't gone to therapy in well over a year now because I felt I no longer needed monthly sessions, but with our baby girl due to arrive in just two short months, I must admit that I've been flooded with thoughts and emotions about my own childhood.

Realizing I'm about to become a mother---a profound and forever life-changing role--- has really stirred up in me something that I've always felt very strongly---that I have the power to give my child the love and life I wish upon every child.  I have never once doubted my ability to be the parent I want to be---because I don't believe that our pasts determine our destinies.

It saddens me to think about all of the kids who grew up to be adults and fell victim to their very own circumstance of growing up in an unhealthy family environment. Maybe they didn't have the strength or support to be better---to be to their children what they wished they would have had in their parents---but breaking that cycle has probably been the largest single priority in my life.  Not just an "option" or a "hope"---but an absolute necessity. If I knew I wasn't capable of breaking it, I honestly wouldn't even consider bringing a child into this world.

I always knew I wanted to have children---and more than anything, I have always known that I will give my children a life where they feel unconditionally loved, unafraid and completely supported.  It is my biggest prayer that God will bless me and guide me on this journey into motherhood because I know it's normal to doubt yourself along the way and I know turning to Him will be the answer.

I didn't mean for this post to get so heavy....I started to write it and couldn't stop and I even debated posting it. But I'm posting it because it's real and it's the truth of how I'm feeling. Though it's fun to talk about nursery updates, baby showers and other exciting things that come with a new baby...I feel like I would be doing myself and my readers a disservice if I never wrote about the stuff that scares and challenges me. Every parent-to-be has fears- whether you had a good childhood or not.  If you didn't have fears, that's when I would be worried.

What were your fears before you became a parent?  How did you overcome them?  Please share your advice and experiences in the comments below.

How far along? 30 weeks (I do these a week behind as a recap of the previous week, so I'm actually 31 weeks today).  Just 9 more weeks to go!

Total weight gain/loss: I will find out at my 32 week appointment, but I imagine it's somewhere around 15 lbs. or more by now.

Maternity clothes? Still wearing maternity pants and regular tops and blouses. Some of my non-maternity dresses are too short with my bump...and I learned this week that some of the maternity dresses that were given to me are too short on me (for work). That was disappointing because they are cute, simple dresses and I'd love to be able to wear them. This past weekend I purchased two tank tops from the Liz Lange for Target maternity line. They are SUPER long and soft. I plan to wear them post-baby too. Love them!  I also wear a lot of shelf bras now from GAP body because with the rib pain, my regular ones are too uncomfortable.

Stretch marks? Not yet, I'm continuing to use Belli's Elasticity Belly OilMamma Mio Tummy Rub and Mustela double-action stretch mark cream in rotation.

Symptoms: My rib pain has reached new levels. Though it's not constant and still only on my left side, it has now spread to the top of my belly. it feels kind of like burning, tenderness and numbness, all rolled into one. It's an interesting sensation.  It hurts mostly after sleeping, sneezing, stretching and standing after sitting in the same position for awhile.
I'm also experiencing occasional mild lower back pain and I've put a box under my desk to rest my feet on so I'm more comfortable.

I've been walking a lot more lately and that has felt really good.

Sleep: I'm sleeping okay. I get up twice a night to pee.  I still experience the hip/thigh pain some nights, but I can usually sleep through it until about 6 a.m., after which all bets are off.

Best moment this week: Going to our 4D ultrasound and getting a sneak peek at baby girl's face. I also had a lot of fun completing a little art project for her nursery over the weekend. You can find that tutorial here.

Have you told family and friends: Yes!

Miss Anything? Coffee. I am looking forward to resuming drinking coffee and green tea. I know you can drink caffeine in moderation during pregnancy but I stopped when I got my positive test so I figured I'll just wait it out at this point.

Movement: Baby girl is most active in the evening and at night. I do feel her on and off during the day too---still feel kicks but more often than not I feel pushes and waves of movement. She likes to swish around in there!

Food cravings: Still subway...like cannot stop getting Subway for lunch everyday. I have also been loving ice cream (with Oreo) and Reeces Peanut Butter cups (the eggs that are out for Easter right now---YES please!)  I also still love a great hamburger with lots of pickles.

Anything making you queasy or sick: Same as last week---not into plain chicken.

Have you started to show yet: Yes! It is pretty obvious these days.

Baby is a: Girl!

Belly Button in or out? Outie and still looks like a deformed cinnamon bun. Mmm...cinnamon buns...add that to my cravings list...

Wedding rings on or off? On

Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy!

Looking forward to: My next OB appointment, my baby showers and my friend visiting from Canada! I'm also excited to get the shelves up in the nursery, but it will be a few weeks.

Thank you for reading and for all of my pregnant readers, please feel free to check in below as well and let me know how your pregnancy is going :) I also welcome everyone's advice and comments about pregnancy!

DIY Gold Polka-Dot Art: Perfect for a Nursery, Bedroom or Any Room!

I love DIY projects---especially ones that make a big impact for little cost.  When I saw this piece of art on Pinterest awhile ago, I pinned it and had intended to replicate it for our master bedroom.  But when I started to design our baby girl's nursery, I thought the whimsical polka dots would actually be perfect for the space since gold is one of the accent colors I'm using in the artwork.

The only difference was that I made mine in a larger size than the one above.  I used an IKEA RIBBA frame in the 20 1/2 inch by 28 1/4 inch size, which is also the size I used to frame my "Keep Calm and Carry On" and "LOVE" prints from MadeByGirl.

As far as supplies, this project is super low-key.  I purchased some shiny gold scrapbook paper and glitter scrapbook paper (I used a gold/silver combo glitter because I liked the look better than solid gold glitter).  Each sheet cost $1.99 at Michael's Arts & Crafts and I didn't even use a full sheet to complete the piece.

Then, all you need is a pair of good scissors, a pencil, something to trace,  a piece of white poster board and a glue stick. I used a Pottery Barn candle holder to trace my circles because I really liked the size of polka dots it produced. If you wanted larger polka dots, you could use a champagne glass (to clarify, I used the top of the candle holder which isn't show in the above photo, not the large base, but the part where the actual candle would be held).

I traced circles onto the back of the scrapbook paper, cut out the polka dots until I felt I had enough (I would say I did about 24 of each- shiny gold and glitter gold).

When I finished cutting out the polka dots, I opened up the Ribba frame, pulled out the matting and  cut a piece of white poster board to match the size of the matting (cut it a tiny bit smaller than the matting so it's easy to tape on).  Then, I taped the poster board to the back of the matting so I could being to plan the placement of the polka dots.

Just like the original piece, I layered some of the dots and some are just hanging out on their own. Once I was satisfied with the placement of the polka dots, I used a glue stick to affix each one to the poster board until it was complete.

Then, I cleaned the glass on the frame, removed some glitter that had fallen onto the matting and voila, a piece of art was complete!

(my husband held it up for me so I could see how it looks on the wall)

(Hanging out next to my LOVE print from MadeByGirl)

Also, I just had to share this adorable bunny I got at Target the other day...too sweet!

Weekend...

This morning H and I went to Precious Glance Ultrasound for our second attempt at a 3D view of our little girl.  Baby girl was a little more cooperative this time and we got a few good shots of her face. It was a cool experience and I definitely recommend it to parents-to-be if you'd like to get another peek at your little one after your 20 week anatomy scan (which is typically the last u/s in your pregnancy).

I always think 3D u/s photos look kind of...like the baby is made of clay...but you can really make out her sweet little button nose in this photo. She also appears to have my husband's lips and adorable chubby cheeks.  We can't wait to meet her. I've heard from quite a few people who did 3D u/s that their newborns did actually look a lot like the way they did on the u/s, so we shall see!

After the u/s, it was time to run some errands. It was gloomy and rainy outside today (and humid!) so what better way to spend time than checking things off of my to-do list?

We made a trip to Michael's Arts & Crafts so I could pick up some items for some DIY projects I'm going to be working on for the nursery.

The first is this polka-dot piece I found on Pinterest:

Super clean, simple and pretty. I'll be sure to post about it once I've completed the piece.

The second piece is something I'm going to have my friends participate in at my baby shower that is being hosted by one of my best friends, Candice.

I don't like baby shower games, so this will be a nice project that guests can be involved in and it will be in her room and have a special meaning.

Instead of pink balloons, I'm doing mint green, turquoise and a bright teal.  I love pink, but I though the minty colors were a little more unexpected and still very feminine. I'm not sure I'll do the baby hanging from the balloons like in this illustration---I'm just going to have each guest write a little message for her on one of the balloons (if they want to) and then I'm going to use actual string instead of drawing the picture (I like texture!) I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I also ordered some prints for the nursery from some of my favorite gals including MadeByGirl and ISeeNoise, so it will be a nice mix of purchased and DIY wall art.

Speaking of cute baby items...I ordered these sweet little bunny slippers online this week from Cassie's Closet.  I plan to use them on her little bookshelf until she can wear them but they were too sweet to pass up:

...and though I'm not into nursery themes, I'm using bunnies and lambs here and there, so there's a little hint at what's to come!

After we went to Michael's we headed to Empire Cafe, one of my favorite lunch (and brunch!) spots, followed by a quick trip to Marshall's Home Goods. I always find a thing or two there for the baby and the prices are unreal.

This little eyelet dress was just $7.99 and came with matching bloomers.

...and this little set was $12.99 and came with that sweet little hat---which made me realize it's the only hat we have for the baby so far...

The day wrapped up with a quick trip to Sugarbaby's Cupcake Boutique where I got a few strawberry cupcakes (my favorite!) I already had one and they are absolutely delicious.

Before I go, here's a quick snapshot of the outfit I wore to work on Friday:

I haven't worn that bubble necklace in a long time so it was a fun way to perk up the outfit. The tank is Lululemon (cool racerback, they are beyond perfect for pregnancy) and the cardigan is Banana Republic.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Ruched

I've talked about this in my weekly pregnancy updates, but aside from pants, I haven't been wearing a lot of maternity clothes.  I'm fortunate to have a lot of looser tops in my existing wardrobe so a lot of the outfits I'm posting aren't anything new if you've been reading my blog for awhile---they just fit differently now because of my shape and it's fun to document that.

I think during a first pregnancy buying maternity clothes can be very exciting.  I've definitely checked out Motherhood Maternity, A Pea in the Pod and GAP's maternity selections, but the truth is, I didn't really want to spend a ton of money buying new clothes that I would only wear for a short period of time.

I actually know several bloggers who also transitioned a lot of their existing wardrobe into their maternity wear, so it was fun to follow their pregnancies and see how they were styling some of the items that they wore pre-pregnancy.

Obviously I'll eventually get to the point where I will need maternity clothes, so I realize that I'll have to transition into the pieces my co-worker generously passed along to me, but until then, I've been enjoying experimenting with the pieces already in my closet.

One of those pieces is this dress I got at Banana Republic.  I actually purchased it early into my pregnancy anticipating that I'd be able to wear it as my belly grows because it has this great ruching and is super stretchy---and long---which is key when your belly makes everything shorter.

It's such a simple piece and I've enjoyed wearing it through all three trimesters.

29 Weeks!

I know I say this every week, but I can't believe how fast time is going.  There are just a little less than two and a half months left before our little girl is due.

So much is coming up in the next month--- baby showers, completing the nursery, classes at the hospital, finishing some of the books I'm reading...and so much more.  Sometimes I feel like I have all the time in the world and other times I feel a slight sense of panic that I haven't done enough yet (I'm sure most of you mommas can relate!)

I've always heard that your third trimester drags on and I'll probably feel that way when I'm 36 or 37 weeks along, but right now my job is keeping me really busy and it makes the weeks fly by.

How far along? 29 weeks (I do these a week behind as a recap of the previous week, so I'm actually 30 weeks today).  Just 10 more weeks to go!

Total weight gain/loss: 12 lbs and probably more by now---I will find out at my 32 week appointment.

Maternity clothes? Still wearing maternity pants and regular tops and blouses. I also started to wear some of my dresses that still fit to work this week since it's gotten a lot warmer.  My stomach seems to be growing so rapidly now that it may not be long before the maternity clothes I have hanging in my closet will start to make an appearance in my outfit photos!

Stretch marks? Not yet, I'm continuing to use Belli's Elasticity Belly OilMamma Mio Tummy Rub and Mustela double-action stretch mark cream in rotation.

Symptoms: I'm continuing to experience the same symptoms as last week---the rib pain on my left side (which has now spread to the top of my bump on that side) and the hip/thigh pain when I sleep. It's never constant though, which I'm ever-so-thankful for.

I'm still going to bed fairly early to make sure I'm getting enough sleep since I'm getting up a couple of times a night to pee and just waking through the night in general. Though I've been getting a good amount of sleep, I do find myself crankier than usual sometimes, it just depends on the day.

Sleep: I'm sleeping okay.  I'm waking up a lot more now throughout the night, but overall I try to make sleep a priority so I'm getting at least 8 hours (of somewhat interrupted sleep) most nights.

Best moment this week: Getting all of the "big stuff" done in the nursery. I love going into her room and just sitting there for awhile, thinking about when she's here.

Have you told family and friends: Yes!

Miss Anything? Still just sleeping on my stomach and not having to hoist my body over a Snoogle every morning...

Movement: Still feeling lots of movement---I noticed this week that the movements are changing a bit---instead of always feeling little kicks, I started to feel larger movements that feel more like the baby is pushing its body up against me. Some days she is super active and other days I feel her more on and off.  She is really active at night, especially if I am lounging on the couch or sitting up in bed. I also feel her hiccup sometimes now! I love it.

Food cravings:
I haven't had any 3 a.m. "gotta have this right now" type cravings yet. Having said that, I've been loving Reeces peanut butter cups and cheeseburgers. I've also been thinking a lot about lattes lately but I'm probably just going to wait until after the baby is here to resume caffeine since I've gone so long without it at this point. I've also been kind of obsessed with Subway. I usually get a 6 inch chicken sub on honey oat bread and load it with veggies and a little honey mustard sauce. I do sometimes get turkey, but I have them heat it in the microwave for me, just in case. I would say Subway has been a major lunchtime craving for the past two weeks.

Anything making you queasy or sick: Plain chicken---I got over this for awhile but it seems to be back---I can't eat plain grilled chicken. I can eat chicken salad, stuffed chicken, breaded chicken, etc. But plain chicken for some reason is just gross to me right now. Weird.

Have you started to show yet: I get asked pretty often "how far along are you?" "when are you due?" and "are you pregnant?" so I think it's safe to say I'm definitely showing and growing by the day!

(these were all taken at 29-29.5 weeks)

Baby is a: Girl!

Belly Button in or out? It's just plain weird looking now, ha.  It kind of looks like a deformed cinnamon bun. Yep, that is the best way I can describe it.

Wedding rings on or off? On

Happy or Moody most of the time: Mostly happy--with a side of moody sometimes.

Looking forward to: Our 4D ultrasound this weekend (they couldn't get good shots at our last one so they asked us to come back). I'm also really excited for my friend to come visit from Canada in April!

Thank you for reading and for all of my pregnant readers, please feel free to check in below as well and let me know how your pregnancy is going :) I also welcome everyone's advice and comments about pregnancy!

Dots for Spring

After months (and months) of wearing pretty much exclusively pants, I was so happy to finally slip into one of my favorite dresses.  Getting dressed in the morning for work these days is kind of an adventure because I never quite know how things will fit since there are pieces I haven't worn in quite some time.

I was happy that this J.Crew silk dress still had enough give to accommodate my new shape. I think it has maybe a few more weeks left to it before I have to move on to stretchier dresses so I'm taking advantage while I still can!

91 Degrees

...is what the temperature reader in my car said when I was driving home from work.  I've been wishing for warmer weather, so I certainly got what I asked for!

I know I've been a horrible style blogger lately and I truly apologize to those of you who come to my blog just for that content. I know not all of my readers are interested in following my pregnancy updates and you're really here just to see the outfits---so I'm trying to get back on track with them now that we have more daylight to work with and my husband can snap some quick shots when I get home from work (thank you, H!)

Needless to say, today's outfit was not the best choice for a 91 degree day.  Fortunately the heat wave didn't hit me until I left work for the day.

Blazer- Gibson (similar)
Pants- GAP really skinny maternity (buy here)
Shoes- Ivanka Trump (similar, nearly identical for $25)
Necklace- Banana Republic (similar)

After we snapped my outfit photos we took Lulu for a nice long walk---I haven't worn shorts in 6 months so it was fun to see how big my belly was wearing something so fitted!

(The tank is from Love Culture, Shorts- Lululemon and the shoes are TOMS)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I will keep up with my outfit photos.  I remember before I got pregnant that I really wanted to document my pregnancy style and that all fell by the wayside, especially in first trimester when I was sick most nights and really exhausted.  Now that my belly is getting really big, it's interesting to see how my clothes fit (or don't anymore haha). Either way, I'm enjoying dressing my pregnant body.

Wishing everyone a great week!

Green for Brunch

This afternoon I met up with a bunch of my friends for brunch at Etoile in Uptown Park. I hadn't been before and the food was delicious. I had a tomato omelet with potatoes and a salad and a croissant on the side with raspberry preserves (amazing!)

A lot of us wore green for St. Patrick's Day!

Because it was such a beautiful day outside, I had my husband snap these quick shots when I got back from brunch. I think it's safe to say my belly is getting big and this dress definitely shows it off!

Maxi Dress- Forever 21 (old); Shoes- Ivanka Trump; Bag- LV Neverfull

Wishing you all a wonderful rest of your weekend and thank you to all of those who took the time to leave comments on my last post, I really appreciate it :)

Our Weekend: Nursery Updates, IKEA Trip & More

Our morning started off early---with the nursery chandelier and curtains installed at 8:30 a.m. followed by a trip to Rice Village to pick up our glider.

I'm so thrilled with how the nursery looks right now.  It's such a beautiful, serene space. I think it's actually turning out better than I had imagined as it all comes together---and it's not even complete yet!

After picking up our glider we had a delicious lunch at Hungry's---one of my favorite lunch spots. I absolutely love their chicken salad plate and tomato basil soup. YUM.

Best.chicken.salad.ever.

Before leaving the Village, we stopped in at Baby Gap because the entire store was 30% off. In addition to picking up some socks, I also got three adorable little items for the baby:

Speaking of shopping, I mentioned in a previous post that I haven't shopped for myself in a long time. I'm perfectly content wearing all of the clothes I already have right now and I look forward to treating myself to some new pieces when I return to work after the baby is here.  I did pick up a couple of items at Target the other day though, so I thought I'd share them!

I loved the stretchy tech fabric of this Champion brand shirt. The color is also a great neutral to pair with brighter workout clothes. It was $24.99 and I got a size medium. It's super long too which is great for the bump.

I also picked up this lilac cotton shirt by Xhiliration for $12.99.  I love wearing tops like this for lounging around the house and running errands. This one is a size large, to accommodate my bump.

Finally, the last item was something I ordered online---I bought this Forever 21 dress in hopes that it would work for one of my baby showers.  Plus, I wear maxi dresses all the time in the summer so it will work great post-pregnancy too:

(buy here- and check out the image on the model- really pretty!)

After we dropped off the glider at home today, we went to IKEA to pick up more items for the  nursery.  We bought some frames for wall art, some ledges we will use as book shelves (thank you Pinterest!) and a new LACK coffee table.

IKEA on a Saturday afternoon=madness central!

We've had our LACK coffee table for five years now and after years of wear-and-tear and a move, it had all kinds of dings on it and was just looking really banged up (I had been using a black Sharpie to cover all of the dings but even that was no longer doing the job). It's a steal at $39.99 so we decided that since we loved it so much, we would get a new one.

I'm so glad we decided to get it! One word of warning though---the legs of our table didn't come with the holes that were supposed to be pre-drilled into them to install the shelf underneath the table.  Thankfully, my husband was able to use his drill to drill in the holes and it all worked out---but I would check the box before you buy to make sure the legs of the table have the holes in them.  It's really not a difficult job, but if you don't have a drill you'd have to return it for a new one.

Before I go---I wanted to clarify something about my last blog post because I have gotten some Facebook comments about it and also a nasty anonymous comment here on my blog.  Firstly, we do not put our dog in the crib on a regular basis.  The photo of Lulu inside of the crib was a one-time deal the day it was delivered and he was in it for less than 30 seconds while I snapped a quick photo.  The sheet he was on has not been washed and the mattress the sheet is on is still wrapped in its original plastic, even today.  Also, at no point during Lulu's 30 seconds in the crib did he touch or make any kind of contact with the bumper (which we ended up exchanging for a different color). He was dead-center in the middle of the crib, sitting and as soon as I snapped the photo I lifted him right out.  I didn't let him walk around or roll around in there.

And speaking of the bumper---I get they aren't for everyone and some people think they are stupid/wasteful/dangerous. I mentioned we did not plan to use it once the baby is sleeping in the crib for safety reasons, but that I got it because I like the way it completes the look of the crib---which is true, and I know tons of moms who did the same thing (and even a few who got some nasty-grams on their blogs about it too).  When we purchased our crib and some of the other items and bedding we ordered, Restoration Hardware Baby & Child was having a promotion where you received $100 off of your order every time you spent a certain amount.  In order to reach this amount and get more money off of our order, I decided to order the bumper to bring us to a total that would save us more money---so basically, it ended up costing me $30 and not the price it sells for online. I don't see that as a waste, if you do, that's okay, but please don't leave me a nasty comment about it.

Speaking of nursery updates---I contemplated showing progress photos (and I may still do that) but I also like the idea of waiting until it's all complete. I will do a full source list for anyone who is interested in where the items in our nursery were purchased.  Right now all of the big elements are in place---furniture, lighting and window treatments.  It's all of the little details that I'm so excited about. I have a few DIY projects I'm planning as well so I may do some separate posts on those if y'all are interested.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and thank you for reading!
